Who is Tansy?
I’m Tansy – an artist living and working in the Alpujarras region of Southern Spain, where I run my studio and gallery in Órgiva. I paint with industrial materials, glitter, gold leaf, and sometimes dead insects – making bold, joyful work that doesn’t quite fit the label of fine art.
My work includes unusual abstracts that feel a bit like alien landscapes, and my soundscape paintings, where I paint the unique waveforms of sounds that matter to people. From meaningful songs to cherished voice messages, each piece turns something you can only hear into something you can see and hold onto. I also run workshops and classes at my studio, sharing the creative process with curious souls who don’t mind getting a bit messy. I’ve always found inspiration in unexpected places. The first spark of inspiration for this series came one night, whilst I laid awake listening to the sound of my husband’s snoring. I pondered whether it would be possible to paint a sound. I started experimenting and soon discovered the means of capturing the ‘waveform’ of specific sounds. I could take this image of the soundwave and paint it!
From this – ‘Whilst I Lay Sleeping’ was born, followed by a whole series of soundscapes. Each one with a different meaning to me and a variety of materials inspired by the sounds that they are based upon.
