Soundscapes

What are Soundscapes?
I’ve always found inspiration in unexpected places. The first spark of inspiration for this series came one night, whilst listening to the sound of my husband’s snoring. I pondered whether it would be possible to paint a sound. Not long after, I discovered the means of capturing the ‘waveform’ of specific sounds. And so ‘Whilst I Lay Sleeping’ was born, followed by this series of soundscapes. Each one with a different meaning to me and a variety of materials inspired byt he sounds thatt they are based upon.
If you like the idea of having a painting of your cat’s purr, your child’s laugh of any other meaningful sound captured in a panting, feel free to get in touch via my ‘Contact’ page to see if I’m currently open for comissions.
While I Lay Sleeping
This piece was the first in my ‘Soundscape’ series and its some thing that I hear a lot of the time but that also means a lot to me – my husbands snoring!
I took the waveform created by the sound (which I recorded whilst he was sleeping) and then painted it in a whole bunch of my favourite materials.
You can have a look and a listen below.

Quicksand
I created this piece from the waveform of a song that means a lot to me – Quicksand by David Bowie.
This song brings back happy childhood memories and it has also been a comfort to me in darker times.
The top line is from the peaks and troughs of the entire song and the base line is a snapshot from the part of the song that is most meaningful to me.
I decided to use emotive materials in this piece – gold leaf, which is an old favourite. For texture, I collected sand from a beach that has been a significant part of my life.

Sparkle For Me
I love this piece – It’s the soundwave of my husband’s laugh!
His favourite colour is orange and my favourite material is gold glitter, so I smushed the two together to make this one. I can’t help but smile when I look at it!
His laugh is pretty unusual, have a listen below.

And The Rain Came Down
A few years back, we had a biblical rainstorm. It just kept chucking it down for hours!
I love the sound of rain and wanted to capture it in a painting. So, I went up to our terrace and recorded the sound.
This is a visualisation of the soundwave that it produced.
